On a cold and clear Saturday afternoon in winter, hockey is played outside on frozen ponds in locales such as Minnesota and New England. But how about New Jersey? On Saturday January 9th that is exactly what happened. With the state firmly clamped in the grip of winter, Rowan University and UMBC squared off in the first game played outdoors in the history of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. In what was tabbed as the New Jersey Pond Hockey Classic the two MACHA teams met outside under the bright sun and crisp 26 degree temperatures. A tightly played and fast paced game, thanks to the great ice, the teams deadlocked at 4 after a 5 minute OT ended scoreless. Though the game had no clear winner there was a winner on this day. The purpose of the game was a dual one as it also served as a fundraiser for the Delaware Valley Multiple Sclerosis Society. Wendi Caulfield, wife of Rowan University head coach John Caulfield, battles MS and is in a wheelchair as a result of the debilitating disease. MAHOA, the local referee organization of MACHA, as well as other leagues, graciously donated their time and talent to the cause. The 4 man crew volunteered their time as well. MAHOA director, Ed Giacomucci said ”we had so many volunteers we had to turn them down.” Wendi Caulfield, who was unable to attend the game because of her health said, “its amazing the way hockey people support each other, I am touched, most of these guys have never met me and to do something like thisthey’re special people and I am so grateful.” Anyone interested in joining the fight against MS can do so at the National MS Society website.
